Effect creators used to spend most of their time on plumbing: rigging a 3D asset to track a face correctly, hand-painting texture masks, writing the logic that decides when an effect triggers. The creative idea was often the fast part. Getting it to actually work reliably across face shapes and lighting was the slow part.
Generative tools are eating into that slow part first, and it's changing who can realistically make a filter that looks professional. Texture generation, mesh cleanup, and depth estimation that used to require real 3D modeling skill can now be produced from a reference image or a text description, then dropped into existing rigging tools.
What's actually improved, and what hasn't
The honest state of things: asset generation has gotten genuinely good. Getting a stylized 3D object or a texture set that matches a mood board is faster than it's ever been. What hasn't caught up is the interaction logic — the part where an effect needs to respond intelligently to a smile, a head tilt, or someone else walking into frame. That's still mostly hand-authored, and it's still where the best creators separate themselves from people just remixing templates.
The effect on the creator economy
The practical result is a lower floor and a higher ceiling at the same time. More people can put out a competent-looking filter than ever before, which means the bar for impressive keeps rising, and the creators who do well are the ones using AI to skip the grunt work so they can spend more time on the one clever interaction that makes an effect actually fun to use, not just pretty to look at.
